Commonly Asked Questions

What are clinical trials & why do people participate?

A clinical trial is a research study that evaluates the safety and effectiveness of investigational
medications, meaning medications that are still being studied and are not yet approved for the use
being tested. Clinical trials are how every approved medication reaches patients.

People choose to participate for many reasons. Some want to explore options when their current
treatment isn't working as well as they'd like. Others value the close monitoring that comes with a study,
or want to help advance care for future patients. Participating is always a personal decision, made
together with your doctor and family.

Who qualifies for a clinical trial?

Every study has its own eligibility requirements, which may include age, diagnosis, the stage or severity
of a condition, past treatments and overall health. Our providers look at your full health picture and work
with our research team to see whether a study may be a good fit for you. Final eligibility is confirmed
during a screening visit.

Not everyone who is screened will be eligible, and that's normal. Even if you don't qualify, the
information gathered during screening can give your doctor a helpful, up-to-date picture of your health
for managing your care going forward.

What conditions do clinical trials focus on?

Our research focuses on digestive and liver health, including inflammatory bowel disease (ulcerative
colitis and Crohn's disease), fatty liver disease, and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). The studies
available change over time, so contact our research team to learn what may be right for you.

Who oversees and conducts the clinical trials?

Studies are led by OC GastroCare physicians, working in partnership with Clinnova Research
Solutions, a site management organization (SMO). Clinnova's research team coordinates day-to-day
study activities, including scheduling visits, managing study medication, and keeping you connected
with your OC GastroCare providers.

Every study is reviewed and approved by an independent Institutional Review Board (IRB) before it
begins. An IRB is a committee that protects the rights, safety and well-being of research participants.

Studies also follow U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulations.

Do I need health insurance to participate?

No. People with or without health insurance may be able to take part, as long as they meet a study's
requirements.

Taking part in a clinical trial does not affect your existing health coverage.

What happens during a clinical research study?

Our research team follows you closely throughout the study. Depending on the study, visits may include
lab work, physical exams, procedures such as a colonoscopy, and check-ins about your medication
and how you are feeling. Your study coordinator is your main point of contact and can connect you with
your providers whenever you have questions or concerns.

The lengths of each study may vary. Some last a few months, while others continue for several years. Before you
decide, your study team will explain how long the study runs and how often you would need to visit.

At the end of a study, your study team will talk with you about next steps. Depending on the study, this
may include returning to your usual care or, in some cases, the option to continue in a follow-up study.

Does it cost anything to participate?

In most studies, the study medication and study-related visits, tests and procedures are provided at no
cost to you. What each study covers varies, and your study team will review it with you in detail during
the consent process.

Many studies offer compensation for the time and travel involved in participating. Whether
compensation is offered, and how much, depends on the study and will be explained before you decide
to join.

How do I find out if a study is right for me?

Call our research team or stop by our Anaheim office. We'll answer your questions, talk about your
health history, and let you know whether there may be a study that fits. There is no obligation to
participate.
